Welcome to Omulu Guanabara Capoeira! We are a high energy group of Capoeiristas (Practitioners of Capoeira) located in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. Our main objective is the preservation of traditional Brazilian Capoeira. We recognize the origin of Capoeira and practice it in the same time honored tradition all while maintaining a modern feel. Whether it be for personal health, martial art training and conditioning, or dancing to the exotic beats of Brazil, Omulu Guanabara Capoeira is the place to be to immerse one's self in the art of Capoeira.
Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian blend of martial art, game, and dance created by enslaved Africans in Brazil during the 16th Century. Portugal shipped slaves into South America from western Africa and Brazil was one of the many American destinations for African captives. These Africans brought their cultural traditions and religions with them to the New World. Capoeira emerged as a way to resist oppression, secretly practice art, transmit culture, and lift spirits.
